Japanese Status of Residence System (visa)

Home > Q&A > Q&A Vol.09

Can you outline the Japanese visa system for foreign nationals to work in Japan?

Japan has a status of residence system for foreign nationals to stay in Japan for a medium to long period. This system grants them any of 29 types of statuses of residence when they enter Japan.

For each status of residence, the system establishes activities allowed in Japan, a period of stay, etc. If you need to change your activities, you are required to file an application for permission for change of status of residence with the Immigration Services Agency. If you need to stay beyond the predetermined period of stay, you are required to file an application for renewal of period of stay.

“Business manager” is one of the 29 types of statuses of residence.
